What it actually is

No syllabus.
Good company.

This is not a book club where people have strong opinions about the passive voice. It's a reason for parents to get out of the house, sit with other humans, and talk about something other than sleep schedules. The book is optional. The coffee is encouraged.

📖

Read at your own pace

Come if you read zero pages. Come if you read the whole thing and are furious about the ending. Come if you read the back cover in the parking lot. All of these are valid.

🍪

Bring a snack rec

The one thing we actually ask. A good coffee order, a pastry you've been thinking about, something you baked at 2 AM — bring the rec. Or just bring yourself.

💬

Derail the conversation

We usually end up talking about something else by the end anyway. Books are just a starting point. What you're really here for is the company and the excuse to leave the house.

🍼

Bring the baby

Obviously. Nursing, fussing, snoozing in a carrier — all welcome. So are older kids, partners, and anyone who is adjacent to a new parent and wants somewhere to be.

How it works

Simple as it gets.

01

We pick a book together

The next pick is voted in by whoever shows up. No committee, no curriculum. Usually something people actually want to read.

02

Read what you can

Life happens. Read the whole thing, half of it, or the back cover on the way there. Your perspective is welcome at any page count.

03

We meet at Café Jardin

4th Saturday or Sunday, 10 AM. Arrive when you can, leave when you need to. Order something good. No one takes attendance.

04

Pick the next one

At the end we do it again — nominate something, vote, grab a coffee for the road. See you next month.

The only rule

Rule #1 of Book Club

Don't be a dick.

That's genuinely it. Be the reader you'd want to meet on a day you forgot everything past chapter three and are running purely on caffeine and good intentions.

Questions

Things people ask us

Absolutely not. Come if you read half of it, a page of it, or the back cover in the parking lot on the way in. Some of the best conversations come from people who had to stop at chapter two. Show up anyway.
Yes. Bring whoever. A partner doing their best. A friend who said they'd start the book. A neighbour who reads completely different things and will give a wild outside perspective. All welcome.
No. Drop in. There is no list, no confirmation email, no form. If you can make it, just come. If you can't, no one's keeping tabs.
Yes. That's the whole idea. Nursing, carrier naps, a toddler reorganising the sugar packets — all of it is fine. This is a café full of parents. No one will flinch.
Excellent. Disagreement is what makes it interesting. Say your thing. Nobody is here to be right — we're here to think together.
It's for parents and people in a parent's orbit — partners, caregivers, people who love someone in the thick of early parenthood. If you found your way here, you're probably welcome.
Download the calendar files above — they have every upcoming date already in them. Or check the date cards on this page. We try to make it easy.
Come as you are. You don't have to explain anything. Sit somewhere comfortable, eat something, listen if you want to and talk if you feel like it. You're among people who get it.

See you at Café Jardin
